Reading the Signs of a Failing Mixer
Three faults fill most of our mixer calls: a drip that hangs on, water that stays cool or lukewarm, and a spray gone thin. Each one points to a different component, and what the shower does with everything switched off tells you which.
A drip with the taps off
the fault sits inside the mixer, where a worn cartridge or washer no longer closes the seal. A brief shed from the head right after use is just leftovers draining.
A handle gone stiff or a temperature that drifts
the same worn cartridge, since it controls both flow and heat.
Cool or lukewarm water
the cartridge blending excess cold into the mix. If hot taps around the whole home run cold together, the fault sits with the hot water system.
A thin or patchy spray
lime scale partly plugging the spray plate, or a restrictor in the head holding the water back.
Seepage at the head-to-arm join during a shower
a loose thread or a spent seal at that connection.
Water getting out through the floor or the walls of the recess is a different problem. See the leaking shower repairs page for that work.

When a Shower Repair Becomes a Replacement
Replace the shower when the fault has worn deeper than any washer or cartridge can fix, or when you want a fresh outlet added or moved. A mixer that has chewed through two cartridges is telling you the whole unit is tired.
A new fitting carries WaterMark certification before a licensed plumber can lawfully install it, and it wears a label under the national water-rating scheme as well. Showerheads in new dwellings need a 3-star water rating; the requirement leaves renovations alone.
Rentals add a flow condition. The head has to run at 9 litres a minute or less before a Queensland landlord can charge the tenant for the whole water bill.
Adding a second outlet, or shifting the shower, is classed as notifiable work in an existing building, so no council permit is needed. We lodge a Form 4 with the QBCC within 10 business days of finishing.
The contractor lodges the form and pays the fee, and may pass that fee plus administrative costs on to the owner. For a full refit, the bathroom renovation plumbing page maps the stages.

From the Shower Head Back to the Wall
Name the parts in order and the fault gets easier to describe: the head first, then the arm or rail, the hose, and last the mixer in the wall.
The head
the part you aim and the part that clogs with scale. Anyone can unscrew it to clean or replace it.
The arm or rail
the arm is a short pipe that brings water from the wall and holds a fixed head. A rail instead clamps a handheld head at any height, fed by a hose from the wall outlet.
The mixer and its cartridge
the cartridge inside controls how much water runs and how hot it comes out, and reaching it means opening the wall.
The diverter
on a bath-and-shower combo, a worn diverter spills water from the spout while you shower, or from the head while the bath runs.
Everything on the outside is reachable without wall work; only the in-wall mixer needs access through tiles or plaster. Tell us on the phone whether your shower is a rail set or a fixed head and we'll bring the right gear. For the tub side of the combo, see the bath installation page.

Where a Shower Head Swap Ends and Plumbing Begins
Yes, anyone can replace a shower head in Queensland, because the QBCC lists that one job as unregulated. The work still has to comply with the standards. That freedom stops at the wall.
Yours to do
unscrewing the old head and fitting a new one, provided the replacement is WaterMark certified.
A licensed plumber's job
the arm, a wall mixer or its cartridge. The QBCC classes each as minor work, which needs a licensee but no permit and no Form 4.
Also licensed, with paperwork
shifting the shower or adding a new outlet. The Form 4 reaches the QBCC within 10 business days of completion.
Unlicensed mixer work leaves you without a compliant record and can void insurance cover.

What Local Housing Means for Shower Jobs
Alderley counted 2,696 dwellings at the last census, and 382 of those were townhouses. A mixer buried in one of those shared walls takes longer to reach than an exposed fitting in an open cottage. Access, not parts, is what drives most of the quote.

Shower Repair Questions We Hear
Call (07) 3523 6417Why does my shower drip when I've turned it off?
The mixer is at fault when water keeps dripping after you shut everything off. A worn washer or cartridge inside it fails to close properly, while brief drainage just after use is normal. Ring us and we will match a fresh cartridge to your mixer.
Why has my shower gone cold?
Usually a worn cartridge in the mixer, which blends in excess cold so the water never warms properly. When hot taps everywhere go cold at once, the water heater is at fault instead, and our hot water plumbing page covers that work.
What causes low shower pressure in Alderley?
Scale blocking the spray holes, a restrictor built into the head, or a worn cartridge are the usual causes on the fitting side. Low flow from every outlet in the home points elsewhere, to the supply side. We test the head first, then work back through the fittings to the wall.
How many litres a minute can a rental shower use?
In a Queensland rental, the head has to run at no more than 9 litres a minute before a landlord can charge a tenant for the whole water bill. For fixtures made from 2005 onwards, look for a water rating of 3 stars or higher. We can test the flow and fit a compliant head.
Who pays for shower mixer repairs in an Alderley unit?
Pipes that serve one lot only, running wholly inside its boundary, belong to the lot owner, so the mixer is the owner's to fix. A shower tray falls to the owner or occupier of the lot even when it is not inside the lot itself. The body corporate's duty starts with shared infrastructure, not your own bathroom.
